A COMMAND TO LOVE

A 21 day Prayer and Fasting Devotional

Day 2  - A COMMAND TO LOVE

by: Jelani Lewis

Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

1 John 4:7–8 NLT

What’s interesting is there isn’t a single instance in Scripture when God calls us to change anyone. Yes, we are called to be influential light in a dark world. Yes, we are exhorted to be a city on a hill. And yes, our commission is to make disciples. However, what we won’t find are Scriptures that say, “Beloved, let us change one another,” or “A new command I give to you: as I have modified you, you should modify one another.” Or my personal favorite: “Fix thy neighbor.” I may have missed it on the YouVersion Bible app somewhere, but making people into what we want or think they should be isn’t found anywhere in the Holy Scriptures.

However, what we do find is a clear command to love. The apostle John writes in 1 John 4:7–8, “Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.” Paul also echoes this sentiment when he encourages the believers at Corinth on the importance of love and helps them understand exactly what loving people looks like: “Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance” (1 Corinthians 13:4–7 NLT).

Jesus even challenges His disciples in Luke 6:35 to “love your enemies!” This doesn’t mean we resign ourselves to simply being a door mat. Nor does it mean we never address an issue or set a boundary. On the contrary, sometimes the most loving thing we can do is set a boundary or speak the truth in love. Nevertheless, regardless of the situation, the question isn’t “How can I change them?” The question is “What does love look like?” And the great thing is, love is a fruit of the Spirit, which means if we submit to the leading of the Holy Spirit and stay intimately connected to Jesus, God actually produces His love in us.

Like every couple, my wife and I have had our share of “animated” conversations over the years. Often the moments of my greatest frustration arise because she operates differently than I do (and of course, my way must be the right way). In the aftermath of those discussions, when I pause to listen to the Holy Spirit, He often whispers a simple question: “What does love look like?” The times I have chosen the love card, by the grace of God, I have seen Him do a work in my heart that often leads to transformation in both of us.

So today, let’s imagine we have been given a command to love. Instead of trying to change everyone, what if we decide to submit to the Spirit, stay connected to Jesus, and simply love. Love our spouse, our children, and our siblings. Love our colleagues, classmates, and neighbors. And yes, even love our enemies. After all, if we obey, we might just give God an opportunity to change us all.

Prayer

Father, thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Today, I submit to the leading of Your Spirit, and as I do, may Your love be produced in me. Help me choose today not to attempt to change everyone, but by Your grace, to love them. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Activation

  • Ask the Holy Spirit if He is asking you to love someone whom you have focused on changing.
  • What is one practical way you may be able to express love toward that person today?

ABIDE IN ME

A 21 day Prayer and Fasting Devotional

Day 1 - Abide in Me

Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.

John 15:4–5 NKJV

In the Gospel of John, Jesus says, “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). He doesn’t mean He’s a prickly “wait a minute” vine. He also doesn’t mean He’s the kind of vine you’d find Tarzan swinging on in the jungle. The word vine in this verse is translated as “grapevine.” So Jesus is really saying that He’s a fruit-producing grapevine. And what kind of fruit does He produce? “Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control”—the fruit of His Spirit (Galatians 5:22–23 NLT).

It’s interesting to note that when a grapevine goes through a struggle or experiences adversity, such as extreme weather conditions, the vine produces heartier and healthier grapes, which in turn result in a higher quality of wine. The same is true of people. People who bear really good fruit are the ones who remain in a committed relationship with Christ when they’re pressed or go through a struggle. They display kindness when they could easily complain. They stay faithful and loving when their marriage goes through a difficult season. They show self-control when they’re mistreated. They demonstrate patience when their children have to learn the same lessons over and over. They stay connected to the Vine—Jesus—and it shows through the sweetness of their fruit.

So what does Jesus mean when He says those who abide in Him bear much fruit? You might think this word means “to produce,” yet it actually means “to carry.” There’s quite a difference between these two! As the Vine, Jesus is the only one who can produce the fruit. That’s not our responsibility—we just carry it. Think about a fruit tree. If you cut off a single branch, it stops producing fruit, and eventually, it dies. But when that branch remains connected to the rest of the tree, it eventually bears fruit.

Similarly, those who stay connected to Jesus—to the Vine—bear fruit, while those who don’t abide in Him “can do nothing.” That’s pretty clear language, right? Yet we so often think that if we just try hard enough and use all our might, we can somehow produce fruit on a broken branch! No, Jesus says the key to bearing the fruit of His Spirit is the word abide. But what does this really mean? The word abide means to “stay in one place for a long time.” And the root of the word implies staying through struggle or adversity.

So why is it important to stay connected to the Vine when we face challenges in life? It doesn’t matter whether the challenge is relational, financial, mental, or physical—whatever it is, it’s vital to stay connected to Jesus because He alone is the source of all life. When we aren’t connected to Him, we wither up and die.

However, when we do abide in Jesus, pressing in and staying connected to Him when things are good and when things are bad, we bear sweet, appealing fruit. This serves two incredible purposes. The first is to display God’s nature to the world. And the second is so people can eat it! In other words, simply by encountering you or being in relationship with you, people can “taste and see that the LORD is good!” (See Psalm 34:8.) They can see the fruit of the Spirit in your life.

Throughout the remaining 20 days of this devotional, you’ll read encouraging stories and principles from various writers about how the Holy Spirit produces the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control in your life. You’ll discover areas of your life where you’re already displaying this fruit and areas where you can grow and mature. You’ll learn there’s more to the fruit of the Spirit than just being nice. But if you only remember one thing from this 21-day journey, remember this: abide in the Vine. You don’t need to produce the fruit of the Spirit in your life; you simply need to bear it. And if you abide in Him—if you stay constantly connected to Jesus through struggle and hardship as well as prosperity and abundance—the more fruit you’ll carry to a dark and broken world.

Prayer

Jesus, I confess that You are the Vine, and I am just a branch. I cannot produce any of the fruit of Your Spirit on my own, but when I am connected to You, I can bear love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Help me to abide in You always—even through tough times. And let other people see this fruit and come to know You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Activation

  • Have you ever tried to produce the fruit of the Spirit in your own strength? How did that go? What could you do differently next time?
  • Think about a time you stayed close to God during adversity. What fruit came out of that season? Did people notice? What did you learn?

Put Your Spirit in Charge

So too the [Holy] Spirit comes to our aid and bears us up in our weakness; for we do not know what prayer to offer...but the Spirit Himself...pleads in our behalf with unspeakable yearnings and groanings too deep for utterance.
- Romans 8:26, The Amplified Bible

As long as you live on this earth, you’re going to be saddled with a weakness. What is it? The flesh and blood body you live in. It’s a body that’s subject to death. A body that’s subject to the physical world around you.

Your reborn spirit doesn’t want to sin. It wants to be completely obedient to God. But the weakness of the flesh causes you to fall prey to the temptations around you.
Does that mean you’re doomed to a life of failure till Jesus comes and that flesh body is glorified?

No! It means you need to build your spirit up, to strengthen it, until it dominates your flesh. We are told to crucify the flesh. Your spirit man must dominate your body. Praying in the spirit by the Holy Spirit applies spirit to flesh. It causes your spirit to rise up and take charge. Just like using barbells strengthens your arms, praying in other tongues strengthens your spirit.

You see, your spirit is more powerful than your flesh, and as you give it outflow, the flesh will simply have to yield to it. Most believers don’t understand that. They’ll be overwhelmed by some sin, and instead of conquering it by the things of God such as praying in the spirit, they’ll simply keep struggling to overcome in natural ways. So they end up failing again and again.

If you’re caught in that cycle, take heart! God hasn’t commanded you to be more spiritual than you can be. He knows your weakness and He’s given you a way to overcome it. He’s given you the ability to pray in tongues—and with your understanding to wield the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God. And no matter how badly you’re failing in everything else, you can do these things!

Be warned though, Satan will try to talk you out of it. He knows that once you learn how to bring the flesh in line, he’ll have no foothold left in your life. You’ll shut the door on him and he won’t be able to get in.

Renew your commitment to praying in the spirit today. Make a quality decision to follow the command God gives in Jude 20 and “build yourselves up…on your most holy faith [make progress, rise like an edifice higher and higher], praying in the Holy Spirit” (The Amplified Bible)!

HEALING

Let the Word of God become real to you. Sometimes, we hear the Word and know it’s true in our heads, but it hasn’t become real in our hearts yet. If that is your struggle, you can build faith in your heart by reading, listening to, and meditating on God’s Word about healing. Faith comes by hearing and receiving the truth in God’s Word. You may need to spend more time with God’s Word than you usually do. You can also be encouraged in your faith by reading and listening to stories of people who have been healed.

Don’t become discouraged when you don’t see immediate results to your prayers. It doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with your faith if an answer doesn’t come instantly. Continue to pray, continue to thank God, and ask others to pray and agree with you.
Ask yourself if there is a spiritual or emotional issue that could be affecting your physical health. It’s important to open up every area of your life to God so He can heal your entire being. Ask God if there is something blocking your healing. If He reveals an issue to you, deal with it through repentance and whatever else you need to do to make it right.

Continue to resist the devil. He is the source of sickness, not God. And he will try to deceive you into doubting God’s healing power. So put the devil in his place. Refuse to accept negative thoughts or doubts, and replace them with God’s Word.
Let God direct you about how to receive your healing. Many times, when we are sick, we get it in our minds that God will heal us in a certain way, and we get disappointed when it does not happen as we thought it would. Often, we block God’s healing power simply because we are not open to the many means God uses for healing. Your healing may come to you by prayer, by medicine, or by both. Be open to all of God’s healing methods.

You may need to see a physician. It is not wrong for a Christian to seek medical care. Medicine is a gift God has given us. Doctors are a means through which God can bring you your healing, so be open to it and visit a doctor if you haven’t already done so.

You may need to simply receive. Many Christians have not learned how to receive from God through simple faith. If you believe this is an area where you are struggling, ask God to help you learn how to receive from Him.

Leaving the Low Life Behind

For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.

- Matthew 16:25

divider

The high life...or the low life? God’s kind of life...or the world’s kind of life? You can’t have them both. It’s one or the other. You have to choose.

You may try to put off that choice. You may try to hang on to the low life while reaching out for the high life at the same time, so you can see if it’s something you really want before you give up everything the world has to offer. But, believe me, you’re not that tall!

You’ll never be able to sample the high life for yourself until you’re willing to let go, until you’re willing to take God at His Word and trust Him to take care of you.

What will happen to you when you do that? You’ll start living the kind of life God describes in Psalm 1. You’ll be like “a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; [your] leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever [you] doeth shall prosper” (verse 3).

In West Texas talk that means your roots will go down so deep that no drought can dry you up and no storm can blow you down. No matter what happens in the world around you, you’ll prosper.

The stronger the wind blows, the more you’ll bend in the breeze. Depression and inflation won’t be able to break you. When the rains stop coming and everyone else is withering away, you’ll just keep on thriving and bearing the fruit of the spirit because you’re drawing up nourishment from the riverbed!

That’s what the high life is like and there’s nothing that the world has to offer that can even compare. I know that from experience. Once you dare to let go and trust God...so will you.

Hell Can't Put Out the Light

In Him was Life, and the Life was the Light of men. And the Light shines on in the darkness, for the darkness has never overpowered it….

- John 1:4-5, The Amplified Bible

Whenever things around you get dark and you feel the devil is about to overpower you, remember this: You have the Light of the world in you, and try as they may, all the forces of hell can’t put it out!

Even when you’re at your weakest, even when you feel like the light within you is small, the devil’s darkness is no match for you.

Let me show you what I mean. Imagine for a moment that you’re in a large auditorium that has no windows or doors to let in outside light. The place is so black you can’t see anything, not even your hand in front of your face. There’s nothing around you but complete darkness!

Now, imagine one little lightning bug flying around that auditorium. Every eye in there would turn toward it. As small as that little light is in comparison to the great darkness around it, you would still be able to see it. That massive blackness wouldn’t be able to do a thing to shut off that bug. Everywhere he flew, the darkness would just have to yield. It would always be dispelled by his light.

When the circumstances around you begin to get black and you’re tempted to despair, think about that lightning bug. Meditate on the fact that Jesus Christ, the Light of the world, is in you. When the revelation of that hits you, you’ll never again let the darkness back you into a corner. You’ll start chasing it down—overcoming it with your light!

Faith — Not Sight

For we walk by faith, not by sight. — 2 CORINTHIANS 5:7
I am not moved by what I see.
I am moved only by what I believe.”
I can’t understand the Lord Jesus Christ by feelings.
I understand God by what the Word says about Him.
I understand the Lord Jesus Christ by what the Word
says about Him. He is everything the Word says He is.”

rbtc ad

Smith Wigglesworth said something that blessed me when I first read it way back in the late thirties, because it was so in line with my own experience. He said:

“I am not moved by what I feel.

Then he went on to say:

“I can’t understand God by feelings.

You will not be able to understand yourself by feelings. Instead, understand yourself as a born again, Spirit-filled Christian, by what the Word of God says about you.

And when you read what the Word says about you, whether you feel like it or not, say, “Yes, that’s me. I have that. The Word says I have that. I can do what the Word says I can do. I am what the Word says I am.”

As you do this, you will begin to develop spiritually.

Confession: I walk by faith and not by sight. (Now make Wigglesworth’s confession, your confession.)
